What has to be on an Irish VAT invoice
If you are an accountable person registered for VAT in Ireland, Revenue sets out exactly what an invoice must contain. The generator above includes all of it. The list is short, and most disputes over an invoice come down to one of these being missing:
- The date of issue, and the date of supply if the goods or services were supplied on a different day.
- A unique sequential number. Not a random reference — the sequence is what makes the set auditable.
- Your full name, address and VAT registration number.
- Your customer's full name and address.
- The quantity and nature of the goods, or the extent and nature of the services.
- The VAT-exclusive unit price, and any discounts or price reductions.
- A breakdown by VAT rate, and the total VAT payable.
- Where reverse charge applies: your customer's VAT number and the words
Reverse charge applies. - Where it is an intra-Community supply of goods: your customer's VAT number and the words
Intra-Community supply of goods. - If you invoice in a foreign currency, the euro equivalent must also be shown.
The authority for all of this is Revenue's own guidance: What information is required on a VAT invoice? If anything here and Revenue disagree, Revenue is right — tell us and we will fix it.
Irish VAT rates
Current rates, effective 1 January 2026:
- 23% — standard rate. Most services and goods, including most trades work that is not construction.
- 13.5% — reduced rate. Construction, repair and maintenance of property, and many other building services.
- 9% — second reduced rate.
- 0% — zero-rated or exempt supplies.
Rates are set by Revenue and change in the Budget. Check Revenue's current VAT rates and their rate lookup if you are unsure which applies to a particular job. This page is general information, not tax advice.
Do this twenty times a month and it gets old
A generator is fine for the odd invoice. If you are issuing them every week, the slow part is not the form — it is remembering to do it, chasing the ones that go unpaid, and keeping the numbers in sequence. WaPay does that from a WhatsApp voice note: say what the job was and who it was for, and the invoice goes out with a payment link, with reminders if it is not paid.
